“There’s something happening somewhere. Baby I just know that there is.”
Wise words from Bruce Springsteen. Over the past few years I’ve been a bit of a ‘no’ person. I’ve had my excuses – Working full time while trying to build up my own business and having health problems is a lot of tricky balls to juggle, but I cannot emphasise enough how important it is to make time to do the things that make you happy. I’ve recently decided to be a ‘yes man’ and starting doing instead of just thinking about it and sitting in self pity at home. And there’s always something happening somewhere! Here’s my top picks over the coming months:
1 // Adam Buxton’s BUG | Hyde Park Picture House, Leeds | 16/10 | SOLD OUT.
I discovered BUG one New Year’s Day when my friends and I spent the whole day hungover on the sofas of my house, eating greasy takeaways and watching videos on Youtube. If you like Youtube comment humour, you should definitely give this a Google. We saw Adam Buxton at The Crucible in Sheffield and he was so bloody funny. I can’t wait for show no.2 tonight. Don’t worry that it’s sold out – he’s doing other shows.
2 // Bill Bailey | Grand Theatre, Leeds | 29/10 | Tickets
Boyfriend and I have been long time fans of Bill Bailey and his awesome musically illustrated humour. We saw him in London a couple of years ago and had front-row-centre seats. He picked on us during the show and asked us both questions we couldn’t answer. So funny.
3 // Tony Law | City Varieties, Leeds | 4/11 | Tickets
I first saw Tony Law on Russell Howard’s Good News. He wore a black spandex onesie and did a really simple sketch about Gok Wan. We were hooked and I’ve now seen his ‘alternative’ comedy twice. Both times were excellent. Bring me MORE.
4 // Dead Meadow | The Roadhouse, Manchester & Corsica Studios, London | 25-26/11 – Tickets
I am the most excited about these shows! I haven’t seen Dead Meadow for eons and when they announced their tour earlier this year there was already a family holiday booked right in the middle of it. Sure enough they tagged an extra couple of shows in the UK onto the end of their epic European tour so Boyfriend and I are going on a mini road trip to see them and spend a little time in London :D
5 // Boyzone | Leeds Arena | 9/12 – Tickets
Almost as far removed as it can get from the music I like now, my life used to revolve around Boyzone when I was a wee girl. Around 13 years since they were last the love of my life (and exactly 20 years since they formed!) I am going to see their anniversary tour with my oldest friend. When we were girls we used to get our parents to call for tickets at 9am on a Saturday morning in hopes we’d get front row to their concerts and we’d dance around my living room copying their dance routines from the tour VHS. The nostalgia is ripe for the picking.
6 // Franz Ferdinand | 02 Academy, Leeds | 26/3 – Tickets
For a time, when I was in that traditional period between pop music and something deeper, Franz Ferdinand were my favourite band. Now I’m a little older I do sometimes claim that they are the laziest band in the world, with what seems like decades between albums. I’ve not listened to their new one much, but I do know that they give some of the best live performances I’ve ever experienced; I once saw them play at the tiny Faversham, Leeds and it was epic.
7 // Elbow | Leeds Arena | 11/4 – Tickets
I saw Elbow live at 02 Academy a few years back and the gig was completely ruined by some guy trying to start a fight with everyone in the audience. I remember Guy Garvey’s vocals not being loud enough to drowned out the chatter from the crowd so despite not being a huge fan of arenas, I think Elbow are probably more suited to that kind of venue. Especially the new Leeds Arena, which is built in tiers with great acoustics to benefit hearing live music.
Any gigs on your horizon? Recommend me!
