Spend Less and Save More with Leeds Building Society

Spend Less and Save More with Leeds Building Society - I'm taking on a 4 week challenge to train myself to be a saver rather than a spender!

I was recently asked by Leeds Building Society to take on their 4 week challenge to train myself to be a saver, rather than a spender. I’ve got to be honest with you guys, I have always been a huge spender so I’m not sure I can do this! However with our recent house purchase & renovations and future plans to build an extension I really need to start saving some money from somewhere. Plus it’s Stu and I’s 10 year anniversary this year and we really want to go somewhere special.

Leeds Building Society has teamed up with  Consultant Psychologist and author of the book ‘Willpower for Dummies’, Dr Frank Ryan to provide me with advice on how to spend less and save more over the next few weeks.

I had to provide details on my spending habits and I was shocked to see that I’ve spent approximately £75 a month on clothes over the past few months. Add that up and that’s £900 a year, enough for my dream trip to Cuba per person or flights to Toronto for two to stay with a friend! After realising that, I hope to avoid buying clothes by keeping that in mind.

We also spend a lot of money on takeaways – sure because we’re both super busy at work and coming home to a renovation, but also because we love takeaway food. We’ve been popping to the shops at least three times a week instead of doing a big shop too. Our organisation has gone completely out of the window.

My goal for the end of the 4 week survey is to cut my clothes spending by at least 60% and to try cooking our favourite takeaways at home in our new kitchen – homemade pizza, burgers and chicken tikka naan kebabs are at the top of my list!

I think I will struggle the most trying to cut down my clothing spend. Each time I go away on a trip or attend a special event I buy something new to boost my confidence. I often get really anxious about these things, so having a new outfit to try out makes me feel excited instead of nervous.

Wish me luck!!

Have you ever done a spend less and save more challenge? Please do share your tips with me in the comments, I think I’m going to need them!! Loves x xx

I have a huge Excel spreadsheet that details all my outgoings, savings and disposable cash as well as the money I owe on my credit card bills, money people owe me etc. It really is huge… and nurtured over many years. I can’t say I stick to it very often but it definitely helps me at least keep track of what I’m spending.
