Outfit Post: How To Make An Outfit Look Expensive

Garden Party Outfit Ideas

It’s finally Autumn so I can hang around in long sleeves and layers… ooh and wear scarves! Thank goodness for scarves. Of course it’s still pretty warm out there right now so I’m easing myself in by keeping my legs bare. I don’t know about you, but sometimes I’m invited to the odd occasion where I want to look a bit more sophisticated than I am, haha. It used to happen more when I worked in my old job, but there are still some fancy occasions for a self employed designer from Yorkshire, trust me!

I don’t have a lot of money to spend on clothes and pretty much everything I own was a gift or bought in the sale, so I’ve become a bit of a pro on how to make an outfit look fancy for not many pennies. Here are my top tips for how to make an outfit look expensive:

// Major on accessories! There’s no way I could ever afford a piece of clothing from Alexander McQueen, but I do have a couple of his scarves – a winter woolen one and a thinner, cotton one for warmer days. Throw on a designer scarf for a fraction of the price of a designer piece of clothing and instantly upgrade your outfit. For guys, a designer tie is the perfect ‘cheat’ accessory item.

// Choose fabrics wisely – some cheaper cotton alternatives fade really easily in the wash and budget fabrics such as viscose can look quite cheap. I always find lace is a good choice! Colours can let you down too – a lot of black fabrics pick up all of the dust and white can turn a less than pretty shade of yellow far too quickly.

// Go for fit over fashion. A well fitting item will always look classier and more expensive than a super trendy piece that is too tight or loose in all the wrong places. Plus classic items never go out of style and can be easily updated with different accessories.

// Wear your best jewellery. I don’t spend a lot of money on jewellery, as I make my own, but I do love to be spoiled on special occasions by friends and family. I was given these adorable peridot earrings by Browns, a local Yorkshire family jewellers, and they are such a delicate earring that they make me feel all fancy and dainty.

// If in doubt, go vintage. You can pick up a beautiful vintage piece for next to nothing these days and you might even get lucky and find an old designer classic lurking at the back of your local vintage shop. Look out for a Harris Tweed jacket or an unloved dress that you can re-hem into your new favourite outfit. It’s vintage, dahling!

Of course, ultimately, just be yourself. As a Yorkshire gal who’s been to her fair share of fashion events I know it can be a little daunting to feel like you stand out like a sore thumb as soon as you open your mouth, but there ain’t nothing wrong with being a little bit different and chances are people will remember you all the more for it!
