Blogging Workshop in Leeds
Exciting happenings at Onetenzeroseven! I’m going to be running my very first workshop here in Leeds!!

I’m really excited to be working alongside the lovely Our Handmade Collective and The Bridal Emporium in the Grand Arcade to bring you ‘Blogging For Creative Businesses’: An evening chat with me about how blogging can improve your online presence and offer something more personal that your customers will love. Refreshments will be provided too!

The class details are still under wraps for now, but here’s a sneak peek – You will get a pack of essential blogging resources and 25 blog post ideas to get you started – plus a FREE goody bag! All for £15.

Indie Biz: Small Business Essentials

// DSLR Camera – This is no. 1 of my small business essentials. I’m a huge fan of photography anyway, so this is hobby/business bridge purchase, but the quality of the photographs is just undeniable. I take all my own product shots which saves me a fortune and the range of settings allows me to take a wide variety of great images regardless of available lighting situations – ideal for working from home with no access to a professional studio.

// Photoshop – When I started using Photoshop about 10 years ago it was prohibitively expensive and therefore a reason to seriously consider cost vs benefit, but these days Adobe offer a completely affordable option with their Creative Cloud subscription service. There are alternative editing programs that I’m not familiar with, but photoshop is the industry standard and not a day goes by when I don’t use it. I find it essential for image quality and to create my own artwork for print (something that print companies charge extra for!) as well as graphics for my blog and social media.

// Notonthehighstreet.com – When they first approach me to join their marketplace as a partner/seller I struggled so much with whether paying their notoriously high joining few would pay off as I’d never factored in selling on notonthehighstreet.com into my business plan. I did a lot of research, talked to some contacts that already sold on there and negotiated with the company to get the best possible deal. In the end I took the leap and ended up making my joining fee back in a matter of weeks. Out of the three this was the one I was most unsure about, but I can honestly say that I couldn’t run my business full time without my notonthehighstreet.com store front.

Small business essentials

Ultimately, do the math and trust your gut. It’s important not to overstretch yourself. I know all too well how easy it is to get carried away with ideas, but you have all the time in the world to implement them. Build up slowly and most importantly don’t get yourself into debt.

BONUS TIPS: How to afford pricey purchases!

Save Up: The obvious one so I had to include this, but I know it’s easier said than done. If, like me, saving is not an option then try…

Birthday/Christmas Gifts: Instead of a birthday present, ask for money towards something important for your business. You might think it’s cheeky, but I’ll bet the people that love you will be thrilled to contribute to your success. My parents helped me buy my DSLR a couple of years ago!

Payment Plans: Inquire with the company to see if you can split your payment into smaller, more affordable instalments. When I joined Notonthehighstreet.com they were more than happy for me to split my payment in two. It meant I had to wait a little longer before my shop was set live, but was much more workable for me at the time.

30 & 60 Day Terms: If you purchase something as a business you often get 30 or even 60 days before you have to pay your invoice, allowing you time to make some money back on the product before you pay for it. Check terms & conditions for specific details and be aware that sometimes initial orders with a company require an upfront payment.
