SEVEN: Ways To Save Money In January

1 // Batch cook. Find recipes for big vats of food such as my Jambalaya and freeze the rest. It’s much cheaper per meal to cook a larger amount of something than to cook for one. If you haven’t got much space, try storing the portions in freezer bags which can mould into the space available.

2 // Look out for offers. January is rife with 2 for 1 deals and discounts to pull in the crowds who have tightened up their spending. Often they are on weekdays and early evenings (before 7) so try to adjust your going out habits for meals and entertainment.

3 // Kill two birds with one stone. Save money on travel by walking more and get fit in the process. If you can’t walk the whole journey, try getting off the bus a few stops early or walking to a friend’s house to carpool.

4 // DIY. Buy a coffee on your way to work? Invest in some disposable paper travel cups and take one from home instead. Eat lunch in the cafeteria? Take a pack-up (tasty lunch recipes) to save pennies or use your leftovers from point 1.

5 // Layer up. Instead of turning the heating up to full, pile on the layers. When I work from home I wear thick sock, slippers, jeans, jumpers and a hoodie! Even cooking spicy food for lunch and running to the Post Office keeps me toasty ;)

6 // Don’t look. If you avoid certain websites and don’t open marketing emails you’ll be less likely to be tempted in the sales. Try these other shopping tips for keeping to a budget.

7 // Get organised. Have a massive clear out, sell unwanted gifts, compare and save on your bills to get a cheaper tariff.

BONUS // Don’t forget community trade and freebie sites like Gumtree and Freecycle! Just be smart and meet in a public place or take a friend.
