DIY – Memory Necklace

DIY Acorn Necklace

I picked up a handful of acorns while Boyfriend and I were in New York a couple of years ago. I wanted to create something I could wear that would remind me of my love of New York and my determination to be successful and live in New York someday. I created this necklace so I can wear it around my neck on my hardest days :) While this is obviously a tutorial to make your own acorn necklace, I also want to encourage you to take the idea and create your own inspiring piece to keep you going when things look tough.

Equipment:

An attachment ring from a spring clasp set
A flat headpin
Necklace chain
Jump ring
Glue (E3000)
Acorn, complete with hat
Jeweller’s pliers
Empty drink bottle

To create a hole in my acorn’s hat I used a sharp, pointed scratch awl and gently twisted while I pushed it in to ensure the acorn didn’t split. I then took a flat headpin and the attachment ring from a spring clasp set (they look like tiny ringpulls from a can!) and threaded them through the acorn hat so that the headpin stayed firmly underneath.

Holding this in place I glued underneath the hat and fixed both pieces of the acorn back together. Then I left this to dry overnight (which explains my sudden nail varnish change!). Top tip: To easily dry your pieces without them moving, thread the headpin through the neck of a small bottle and sit the acorn upside down on the rim.

Once dried, bend the headpin into a loop with jeweller’s pliers (or raid your dad’s toolbox!). I find wrapping the end around a few times makes the loop more secure.

Add a jump ring to your loop and thread onto either an existing chain or one you’ve made up yourself and you’re done! An instant memory necklace! :)
